Three reasons why stargazing will give you a brighter outlook
Little children spend a lot of time looking up. Their small statures give them a unique and fascinating perspective on the world. Hang around them long enough, and they’ll point out a parrot high up in a tree or a cloud shaped like a narwhal.
But looking up is perhaps a lost art among adults and yet it just so happens that it is incredibly good for us – particularly if we take time to stargaze and even more so away from the pollution and artificial light of the city.
So here are three reasons for making stargazing a regular occurrence in your life.
- It makes us better humans.
When connecting to something that is far bigger than ourselves, it increases our sense of awe. It’s humbling to realise how small we are in the expansiveness of the universe – not in a way that diminishes us, but it puts our place in perspective and increases our empathy and kindness towards others. It also urges us to be better stewards of our plant and environment.
- It increases creativity.
Looking into the inky black expanse dotted with a myriad of stars induces curiosity and creative thinking. Contemplating the wonder, the pure beauty and mystery beyond our comprehension can stir the imagination.
- It cultivates mindfulness.
Allowing time for your eyes to adjust and space for silence, you become more aware of more going on up there. It’s also grounding. Studies have shown that the whir of fragmented thoughts quiets, it calms your brain, and your body relaxes.
Next time you are craving a restful break or needing a country escape, consider somewhere that will allow you to appreciate the night sky in all its glory.
Taking time to gaze at these ever-present sentinels reminds us of how vast and mesmerising the universe is and how intricate the detail is.
All you need to do is look up.
